Designers vs. Developers: Why You Can’t Communicate With Both the Same Way

The first time I ran a web project, the designer cried, the developer ran away, and the homepage was beige.

Ok, maybe not that dramatic, but it wasn’t good. I thought I was being clear, but I had no idea how to do a great job.

What I Learned From My First Web Project Disaster

Now, after 10+ years leading web builds, I’ve learned how to keep things running smoothly—without emotional damage (or disastrous results).

Here’s what I wish someone had told me sooner:

How to Communicate With Designers (Without Crushing Their Creative Flow)

  1. Designers are creative visionaries. They thrive on feedback and freedom.

Instead of “I hate the orange,” try: “I’m not loving the orange—maybe red? What do you think?”

That little opening gives them room to work their magic and keeps the energy collaborative.

How to Communicate With Developers (So They Execute Exactly What You Want)

  1. Developers; however, are logic-driven executors. They need clear, specific instructions.

If you say “make all the text boxes blue,” they’ll do exactly that—even if it looks terrible.

Also, when working with developers, break tasks into batches. Be precise. And for the love of HTML, don’t switch things mid-sprint unless necessary.

The Big Lesson

In summary, you cannot work with designers and developers the same way. They are each geniuses but require very different communication styles to be effective in their role.
