How Agency Leaders Improve Team Communication

Team communication can be a significant headache if you’re not familiar with the process.

After 10+ years of leading successful virtual teams, I can tell you that the key to avoiding misunderstandings is to know WHO you’re talking to when you talk.

If we think we can communicate the same way with everyone on our team and get the same results, we’re absolutely wrong.

Advanced leadership is about meeting people where they are so they can truly hear what we’re saying. As the team leader, we have to be able to adapt our approach as the situation demands.

For example, when I talk to the technical people on my team, it’s a very different conversation compared to when I’m speaking with my design team, who are more creative and focused on aesthetics and design.

Both teams aim to achieve results, but the way they communicate and process information is vastly different.

Leadership isn’t just about giving directions; it’s about understanding what each person or team needs and using the communication style that best achieves the desired outcomes.

To lead effectively, especially with a diverse team, you need to communicate in a way that aligns with how they operate. This ensures everything is clear, everyone is on board, and everyone is on the same page.
