3 Non-Technical Skills to Look For in an Amazing Web Developer

I have been fortunate enough to have led an amazing web development team for almost 10 years and have learned a lot about how to hire amazing people.

A lot of people when hiring dev help only look at the tech skills but I am here to tell you there is so much more you need to look for when hiring if you want your project to be an enjoyable experience.

  • 1. Kindness. Beyond knowing how to work with CSS, are they a nice person? Your job will be so much less stress if you are working with someone who is sincerely nice and cares about your projects’ success.
  • 2. Patience. Tech people working with non-tech people (I put myself in this bucket), can be an incredibly frustrating as we rarely understand what they’re saying to us. Take the time to find someone who doesn’t mind explaining what is happening in a language you can understand (without the eyerolling).
  • 3. Humility. A key to an amazing leader is someone who can admit they made a mistake without blaming someone else. Double down on finding the smartest people you can but also those who know they’re human and aren’t afraid to admit that they’re not perfect without a lot of attitude.

What would you add to this list from your experience in hiring web developers?

If your agency is looking for a kind, patient, and humble dev team to collaborate with, we’d love to chat.
